Elevated E. Coli Levels Close 3 Beaches

The McHenry County Department of Health issued a notice Friday after discovering increased bacteria amounts in three local swimming areas.

Several area beaches were closed Friday afternoon after they didn't pass bacteria tests, officials said.

The McHenry County Department of Health conducted beach water samplings at 38 licensed beaches on Wednesday and collected follow-up samples on Thursday.

  • Indian Trails Beach, 228 Indian Trail in Lake in the Hills
  • Veterans Park Island Beach, 316 Island Drive in Island Lake
  • Deep Springs Wood, #2 in Wonder Lake

The three beaches were being re-tested Friday afternoon, according to a county news release.

To prevent illness associated with swimming, all licensed beaches on the 12 lakes in McHenry County are tested every two weeks during the summertime to monitor E. coli levels and assess water quality.

Water sampling results are reported to the appropriate beach authorities. The MCDH posts advisories and closed signage for beaches with elevated E. coli results.
