Local Schools Announce Tuesday Closures; Others Remain Open

The extreme cold will keep some Cary and Crystal Lake area students home on Tuesday.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — Some schools have announced closures for Tuesday due to the extreme cold.

Here is a look at local school districts that announced closures for tomorrow:

  • Cary District 26
  • Fox River Grove District 3
  • District 47 schools
  • Community High School District 155 schools will be closed. Students will have an e-learning day. All after-school activities are still scheduled to continue.
  • Huntley District 158: D158 will have an e-learning day and all schools will close. All athletics, activities and facility rentals will be canceled.

Meanwhile, some schools will remain open. Barrington 220 will implement a "cold action day" Tuesday, allowing all schools to remain open with several protocols in place "to ensure student safety." There will be no outside activities Tuesday.

Barrington 220 school officials are still determining whether to cancel after-school activities.

Community Unit School District 300 has not yet announced whether schools will closed. School officials did issue a "winter weather" watch Monday evening, stating that schools may closed, which is meant to prepare parents for that possibility. Schools could still open as normal as well, school officials noted.

A cold weather advisory will take effect at 9 p.m. Monday and will continue through noon Tuesday. Wind chills as low as 25 to 3o below zero are expected for portions of north central and northeast Illinois, according to the National Weather Service.
