McHenry Co. Funeral Home Seeks Liquor License
As celebration of life memorials, where food and alcohol are served, become more popular, some funeral homes are seeking liquor licenses.

MCHENRY, IL — As more families opt to celebrate the lives of loved ones — a shift from the traditional and more somber funerals and visitations typically planned in the past following a death —suburban funeral homes are looking for ways to keep up.
This trend is among the reasons why Robert Justen, owner of Justen Funeral Home, recently approached the McHenry City Council seeking a liquor license, according to the Northwest Herald. A handful of Illinois funeral homes already have liquor licenses and allowing liquor to be served at funeral homes provides an option for customers looking to host a celebration there instead of seeking out alternate venues.
Otherwise, it is typical for the funeral home to handle the cremation and then families to host the celebration of life, which could include food and drink, elsewhere, according to the article. Justen told the Northwest Herald he hopes to offer those services in-house and is working with city officials in McHenry to make that happen.
