McHenry Co. Winter Storm: Closures, Weather Updates

Here is the latest on Wednesday's winter storm.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — The snowfall is here and is expected to continue throughout the afternoon and evening across McHenry County and the Chicago area.

Several school districts have cancelled after-school activities and some have opted for an early release. On Tuesday afternoon, District 47 officials announced schools will be closed early on Wednesday.

As of 10:15 a.m., heavier snow began to "overspread" the Chicago area from the west and southwest, and by about noon, accumulating snow will expand into the Chicago metro area and will be heavy at times, according to the National Weather Service.

Snowfall rates of up to one inch per hour, sometimes at a rate of more than an inch per hour, are expected Wednesday, and the heaviest snow is predicted to hit between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., weather officials said. McHenry County could get between four to six inches of total snowfall.

Wind gust of between 20 to 25 mph are also in the forecast. Hazardous travel conditions are expected during the Wednesday evening commute.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 3 a.m. Thursday for McHenry County and throughout the Chicago area.
