DARIEN, IL – A portable toilet was burned to the ground over the weekend at Carriage Greens Country Club, with police considering it arson, the owner said.

About 3:30 a.m. Sunday, the structure was destroyed in a fire on the 15th hole, owner Brian Broderick said in a message to Patch.

He offered a reason for the increase in vandalism this year on the golf course.

"When local aldermen/alderwomen and homeowners’ associations cater excessively to residents’ demands without expecting civic responsibility in return, it can create a culture where individuals feel no ownership or obligation to their community," Broderick said. "They become selfish and shortsighted. This lack of shared responsibility leads to disregard for public and private spaces and a higher tolerance for vandalism."

Meanwhile, Broderick said the golf course plans to install 1,000 linear feet of fencing soon because of the increasing vandalism. The club has held out the possibility of even more if the problems persist.

Neighbors don't want the fencing, given that the view of a golf course improves their home values.
