Darien Man Arrested In Fatal Crash: Police

The man was taken to a nearby hospital. He is now in jail.

DARIEN, IL – A Darien man was arrested on felony charges in a fatal crash that occurred earlier this week on Interstate 55, state police said.

Joseph Hathaway, 60, was charged with aggravated driving under the influence involving death and aggravated driving under the influence, according to a state police news release. He lives in the 1400 block of 73rd Street, property tax records show.

About 3 a.m. Sunday, a white Toyota taxi was rear-ended by a silver Acura in the center lane on southbound I-55 near Interstate 294 in Indian Head Park, police said.

The Acura became disabled in the lane and was struck by a black Kia SUV, driven by Hathaway, police said.

The Acura driver, who was not identified, was pronounced dead shortly afterward, police said. Hathaway was taken to a nearby hospital.

Hathaway remained in the Cook County Jail as of Wednesday morning.
