Darien Police Urge Residents to Keep it Safe on New Year’s Eve
Police will be on the lookout for unsafe drivers, especially people driving under the influence and seat-belt violators.

Officers at the hope people celebrate New Year’s Eve with equal doses of merriment and caution.
According to the Department of Transportation, the holiday can be one of the most dangerous nights of the year on the nation's roadways because of drunk and impaired driving.
In 2009 alone, 10,839 people were killed in drunk driving crashes, representing 32 percent of all traffic fatalities for the year, officials said.

In Darien, officers will be increasing vigilance to keep the roadways safe.
“We participate in an Illinois Department of Transportation program where we are on the lookout for unsafe drivers, which includes DUI and seat belt violations,” Darien Police Officer Nick Skweres said.
