Darien Saw Another Drop In Crime in 2024: Stats

Overall, crime has fallen for nearly a decade in town, the police department's annual report shows.

DARIEN, IL – The number of violent and property crimes in Darien dropped again in 2024, according to the police department's latest statistics.

Last year, police responded to 150 violent crimes, down by eight from 2023.

All but three of the violent crimes in 2024 were under assault-related categories. The police also handled two cases of forcible rape and one case of forcible fondling, according to the department's annual report.

In 2024, 394 property crimes were reported, down from 419 the previous year. The biggest drop was in fraud-related categories, down to 131, from 163 the year before. Most of those involve scammers using computers and other devices.

Thefts from cars increased by two, to 36. Burglaries of buildings fell to 13, from 18. An arrest was made in three of the burglaries, police said.

Meanwhile, retail theft cases rose to 68, from 57. Walmart has long been a hotbed for local shoplifting, with the suspects usually coming from out of town.

According to police statistics, crime overall stayed level from the mid-1990s to 2010. From there, it rose until 2015. Since then, crime has fallen, police said.
