Darien Walmart Gunshot Victim Recovering at Hospital

The shooting may have begun as a fight within a group of people at the store's Subway restaurant, reports say.

The man who was shot Thursday night at the Walmart in Darien is in stable condition and remains in the hospital.

Detectives are following leads as police continue searching for the shooter, according to the City of Darien.

Darien police were called around 5:41 p.m. to Walmart for reports of shots fired inside the store, Darien Police Chief Greg Thomas said.

The gunman fired three to five shots, and one person was injured by a single gunshot wound in his shoulder. The shooter had left the scene by the time police arrived.

Police say the shooting resulted from an altercation in a Subway restaurant inside the store, and they don’t believe this was a random incident.

An employee of the Subway in the Walmart told the Chicago Tribune several people, 18 to 24 years old, were involved in the argument that lead to thrown punches and then a drawn pistol before the group left his line of sight and shots rang out.

Walmart opened for business Friday.
