Lace School Art Fest to Showcase Student Talent

Lace Elementary School's annual Art Fest will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 Friday, May 6, in the Lace School gym, 7414 S. Cass Ave.

Calling it a “sense of pride night” for the students, principal Marty Casey encourages the community to attend the school’s annual Art Fest this Friday.

“It’s a wonderful family event that highlights every child’s artwork,” he said. “And it’s just truly remarkable to see the progress these children have made in such a short period of time.”

The fest will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Lace School gym, 7414 S. Cass Ave.

“The best part is that it is no charge to come, and we celebrate all the great art created over the 2010-11 school year,” said Lace School art teacher Sally Misiora.

And not only can attendees view at least one piece of art by each Lace Elementary School student, but they can also create their own masterpieces. Lace fifth-grade students will be assisting with a number of different art stations where community members can create a string painting, get their faces painted, get a fake tattoo, or do some finger weaving.

There will also be popcorn, candy or a drink “at starving artist prices,”  Misiora said.

“So if you want to see beautiful art, hear some music, create some art and enjoy an evening with family and friends, stop by,” she said.

Misiora has enjoyed working with Lace students on their projects. She said there are many reasons she loves teaching art.

“When students complete a project and they are all hanging in the building you can see the individuality in each piece of art,” she said. “(And) I love when students develop a style in their art and I can recognize their work without seeing the name. Then I know they are creating from the inside out.”

Casey hopes the community will attend the Art Fest and help encourage the school’s budding artists.

“It’s a sense of pride night where students can go out and show off their artwork to their families and residents around here,” he said. “It’s wonderful.”
