More 'Troubling' Damage At Darien Golf Course

The owners are asking about a permit to put up a fence, an official said.

DARIEN, IL – Darien officials on Monday reported more damage and problems at the Carriage Greens Country Club.

Earlier this month, the golf course's owners told Patch that neighbors have turned a "blind eye" to those trespassing on and damaging the property.

They warned that they may have to erect a fence to solve the problem. That is something that neighbors apparently do not want.

At Monday's City Council meeting, Alderwoman Mary Sullivan said the vandalism and trespassing "sadly" continue.

Both nearby homeowners associations – Carriage Way West and Pinehurst – have sent out notices reminding members to keep an eye out for vandals and trespassers, she said.

"I've had some nearby residents reporting youths riding e-bikes around the course at night onto the greens, causing destruction," the alderwoman said. "It's very troubling because residents are trying to be as vigilant as possible."

She also said reports have surfaced that people are helping themselves to the course after hours, playing golf without paying.

"Stay off the course, pay to golf, keep your bikes on the street. If not, you'll get hit with a ticket and maybe go to jail," Sullivan said.

Mayor Joseph Marchese noted the warning about putting a fence up. He said one of the owners had called a city official about the process for getting a fence permit.

A couple of decades ago, he said, the same fence warning was put out. But he said neighbors rallied, resulting in the perpetrators being caught.

Marchese said he believed the owners were more serious this time.

"Hopefully, we can organize another meeting (with the neighbors) and put this fence talk to rest and catch the people who are doing this," the mayor said.

Patch left messages for comment Tuesday morning with country club owners Adriana and Brian Broderick.
