DEERFIELD, IL — If you’re like many of your Deerfield neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.
Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.
Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Deerfield area.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:
- Deerfield Park Foundation, 836 Jewett Park, Deerfield — mission is to offer financial assistance to those in need who desire to participate in Deerfield Park District programs and to ensure accessibility to the community.
- Orphans of the Storm, 2200 Riverwoods Road, Riverwoods-Deerfield — animal shelter with a mission to take responsibility for each and every orphaned, abandoned, abused, or neglected dog and cat who reaches our doors; to take them in and shelter them; to provide the best medical and physical care possible for them; to nurture them back to health if need be; and finally to place them into warm, loving, adoptive homes where they can enjoy the lives they deserve.
- Gigi's Playhouse, 750 Estate Drive, Suite 100, Deerfield — organization with a mission to change the way the world views Down syndrome and to send a global message of acceptance for all.
- West Deerfield Township Food Pantry, 601 Deerfield Road, Deerfield — donations of non-perishable food items, cleaning and personal care products are welcome.
- Center for Enriched Living, 280 Saunders Road, Riverwoods — provides valuable programs and services for teens, adults, and seniors with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
