Brottman Paces Warriors in State Meet
Powell and Brottman give Deerfield High School all its points in state swim competition.

Barbara Brottman provided seven of Deerfield High School’s 10 points in the Illinois High School Association State Swim Meet helping the Warriors to a 29th place finish out of 43 teams today in Evanston.
Brottman finished ninth in the 200-yard freestyle and 10th in the 500. Ruby Powell, with a 10th in the 100 backstroke, added the rest of Deerfield’s scoring.

Brottman established a personal best of 5:01.08 in the 500 during Friday’s preliminary round and did even better 12 hours later with a 5:00.78 in the finals. A senior, this was her fourth consecutive State Meet. Next year she will swim for Rutgers University.
“I’m totally happy with the way I swam,” Brottman said. “When I got in the water I felt good. I knew I could do it.”

Powell, a sophomore, made her second trip to the State meet moving up from the 12th best time in the preliminary heats Friday in 57.29 to 10th in the finals though she sway nearly a tenth of a second slower in 57.38.
“I feel pretty happy,” Powell said expressing optimism for the future. “Everything I do I learn from.”
