Cook Co. Tax Bill for North Suburban Homeowners Up 1.7%

That means the average property tax bill for residents could have about a $110 increase this year.

North suburban homeowners in Cook County will see a slight increase in their property taxes this year, according to the county clerk's office Monday.

The average tax bill for a resident in that area will be $6,685.55, an increase of 1.7 percent or $110.39 from last year. That amount is based on a single-family residence with a market value of $261,500.

Cook County is divided into three regions, which are reassessed every three years by the county assessor. The North Suburbs will be reassessed later this year.

Exact amounts on property tax bills will be sent to homeowners later this summer, and payment is due Aug. 1.

Of the three Cook County regions, the North Suburbs saw the smallest increase. Property taxes for City of Chicago homeowners were up by 12.8 percent, while homeowners in the South Suburbs saw a jump of only 2.1 percent.

And although northern residents might have had the smallest increase, they're still paying the most in property taxes. The average tax bill for Chicago homeowners is $3,633.19 (based on a tax rate of 6.867 percent), and it's $4,986.22 (based on a tax rate of 13.662 percent) for those living in the South Suburbs.

The tax rate for the North Suburbs is 10.649 percent.
