Deerfield Mayor Says 'Only Matter Of Time' Until Serious Electric Scooter Accident
The Deerfield Village Board is exploring a new ordinance that would restrict the use of motorized scooters and bikes to the streets.
As spring arrives and our kids head outside, many of them are riding electric scooters and motorized bikes. When used responsibly, these vehicles can be a great way to get around. They can be fun and convenient, but they are also fast and powerful and potentially dangerous when used irresponsibly.
Recently, we’ve heard from residents across the Village — parents, grandparents, drivers and pedestrians — about kids zipping through intersections, riding on sidewalks and ignoring traffic laws. And while we haven’t seen a serious accident yet, it’s only a matter of time before we do.

That’s why the Village Board is taking a hard look at how we regulate these vehicles. We’re exploring a new ordinance that would restrict the use of motorized scooters and bikes to the streets, keeping them off sidewalks, bike paths and out of our parks. It would also make sure riders follow the same rules of the road as cars and, in some cases, require a driver’s license. These common-sense measures are meant to prevent accidents, not limit fun. As the Board holds meetings, listens to public input and discusses potential regulations, we want to stress that parents play a vital role in keeping our community safe.
This isn’t about punishing anyone. It’s about protecting everyone. Because every child deserves to enjoy their neighborhood. Every parent deserves to know their child is safe. Every pedestrian deserves to walk without fear and every driver needs to know what to expect on the road.

But passing laws isn’t enough. This is also about a responsibility shared by all of us. Our police officers will do their part, and so will the Village Board. But parents, you have a role to play too. Talk to your kids. Help them understand the risks. Remind them that safety isn't just about rules, it's about respect for others. Fast-moving scooters can be hard for drivers to see, and they pose a serious threat to pedestrians, especially children and older adults, when riders speed by without warning.
I believe in our ability to come together and solve problems with common sense, compassion and a deep respect for one another. That’s how we keep Deerfield safe. That’s how we look out for each other.
If you have thoughts or suggestions on the proposed rules, please share them by emailing the Village Board at villageboard@deerfield.il.us.
Let’s work together to keep Deerfield safe for everyone.
Thank you,
Mayor Daniel C. Shapiro
