Frigid Weather Continues, Schools Remain Closed

With a wind chill warning due to remain in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday, Deerfield Public Schools District 109 and Deerfield High School have cancelled school and all related activities Tuesday.

Classes are also cancelled Tuesday for Holy Cross School, according to an announcement on its website, and Chicagoland Jewish High School , according to Communications Director Tara Seymour.

Township High School District 113 posted a notice on its website Monday calling off class and all other activities Tuesday including after school and evening activities.

District 109 is also telling families to plan to have children in school through June 12 rather than expect an end to school June 6 as previously announced, according to an email from Superintendent Michael Lubelfeld.

“We build five emergency days into the proposed calendar to compensate for emergency closings,” Lubelfeld wrote. “We also build an extra day into the calendar so that we don’t have to dip into the emergency days if we have only one ‘weather day.’”

In most years school ends ahead of the scheduled date because emergency weather days are not used. This term four day have been used before the end of January.

While District 109 has already pushed back the end of school, Deerfield High School did not use up its allotment of snow days when it cancelled classes Jan. 6 and 7. The action closing school today and Tuesday will dip into the reserve.

The Deerfield Public Library, which was closed today, will be open from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to an email from Communications Director Judy Hoffman. Due dates for all materials are extended to 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Deerfield currently has a temperature of one below zero with a low plunging to -19 tonight and getting no warmer than zero Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
