A fiery crash shut down the Tri-State Tollway Thursday afternoon. A Buick SUV and a big rig caught fire after colliding with a semi-tractor trailer around 1 p.m. near Deerfield, on I-94 between Illinois Route 22 and Deerfield Parkway.
Three people were taken to local hospitals.
State Police said the SUV driver lost control and passed in front of the semi, which swerved and hit the SUV. The vehicles then struck the concrete wall, and the BMW struck them. The semi spilled its load of canned vegetables all over the road.
The eastbound lanes were closed for several hours leading into rush hour.
