Gallery: ‘Creepy’ Castle Goes up Downtown
Decoration at Waukegan and Deerfield Roads is hand made by a Chicago artist.
Someone looking for a placed all dressed up for Halloween need go no further than the southwest corner of Deerfield and Waukegan Roads.
For the last 10 years, Diane Dreksler-Sturck of Diane’s Art Studio in Chicago has built the Halloween display at that corner for the owners of the Deerfield Square shopping center. It is not an easy thing to do.

“Everything is attached in some way,” Dreksler-Sturck said. “They’re nailed, fastened or stitched. They have to endure the elements, the wind, the rain and (everything else about) Chicago.”
All the characters and scenes are made by Dreksler-Sturck or her partner, Eve Butz. The display itself came out of Dreksler-Sturck’s imagination. “It’s a medieval castle, haunted, creepy scene,” she said. “I love the gypsy,” she added referring to a woman with a crystal ball.
