DEERFIELD, IL — As the celebration nears a decade of existence, National Coffee with a Cop Day returns next week, with the Deerfield Police Department set to participate. The mission of Coffee with a Cop is to break down the barriers between police officers and the citizens they serve.

From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct, 1, Deerfield police will be at Starbucks, 675 Deerfield Road.

"This is a great opportunity to ask questions, share concerns, or just say hello in a relaxed, friendly setting," the department said in a social media post. "No agenda, no speeches — just coffee and conversation. We look forward to seeing you there."

The day, which originated at a California McDonald's in 2011, became part of National Community Policing Week five years later. National Coffee with a Cop Day now continues each year on the first Wednesday in October.

The event is intended to further efforts nationwide to bridge the gap between the community and the law. According to the event's website, Coffee with a Cop events are held in over 40 countries and are conducted in nine different languages.
