Sam Shafron, 88, of Deerfield for 50 years, died May 25 at home with family members by his side.
Shafron was born May 23, 1925, in Derry, Pennsylvania to Mary, nee Klym, and John Shafron. He proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a radio operator on a B-24 aircraft from 1943-1945. He was stationed in Italy.
Shafron graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1949 with a degree in economics. He devoted his career to the insurance industry, working initially for Baltimore Life Insurance Company for 12 years. He then accepted a position at Washington National Insurance Company in Evanston in 1964 where he became vice-president in charge of underwriting. Sam retired in 1988.
He was an avid lover of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers, crossword puzzles and his family.
He was the beloved husband of Phyllis, nee Watkins for 65 years; loving father of Damian (Michelle), Amanda (Paul) McCurtain, Dylan, Andrea Lathan and the late Devin; proud grandfather of Brynn (John) Moore, Sean (Kelly) McCurtain, Megan McCurtain-Becker (Matt Becker), Ethan Lathan and the late Michael Shafron; cherished great-grandfather of Cael and Cameron Moore.
The funeral was held earlier today at Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home in Highland Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Devin Shafron Memorial Book Fund, 707 Lake Cook Rd., Ste. 123, Deerfield, IL 60015.
