Sub Zero Weather Returning to Deerfield

With two days of bitter cold forecast for Deerfield starting Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service, officials in Deerfield Public Schools District 109 and Deerfield High School will make decisions by Sunday about holding class Monday.

District 109 Superintendent Michael Lubelfeld expects schools to be open Monday and is working with Township High School District 113 and Olson Bus Company to make sure things are working over the weekend so school can go on as scheduled Monday.

“If schools will be closed or a delayed start plan implemented, we will send notifications and post information on our website and social media accounts by 7 p.m. Sunday night,” Lubelfeld wrote in an email. Deerfield High School will make its decision Sunday for Monday and Monday for Tuesday.

A decision for Tuesday in District 109 may not be made until 5:30 a.m. that day. “We don’t know that we’ll have the luxury to inform the community about changes as early as in the last round of closings, but if there are schedule changes, we will get the word out no later than 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday as per our inclement weather procedures,” Lubelfeld wrote.

At this point, the National Weather service is predicting a low of minus four Sunday night with the temperature only expected to climb a degree Monday before falling to -17 that night. Tuesday’s forecast calls for a high of three below again and a negative nine that night.
