Village Of Deerfield: Mayor's Message On 'The Greatness Of A Community'
Residents will come together this weekend for the annual Harvest Fest.

We live in a world where dividing ourselves into “us” and “them” is easy and distraction is constant. In this difficult time, violence too often touches our schools, and political spaces meant for meaningful debate and conversation are shattered by unforgivable cruelty and bloodshed. It is with this backdrop, when our worst fears and anxieties unexpectedly grab us by the collar, that we must remind ourselves that our sense of decency cannot be forgotten and our sense of safety cannot be taken for granted. Above all, we must remember the importance of being part of a collective community, where we are stronger together

“Community” is more than just a zip code. It’s a shared understanding that each of our own wellbeing is inextricably tied to one another. It’s the belief that when one of us is knocked down, it’s up to all of us to help raise each other up. When that happens, we all stand a little taller.
I truly believe that it is our sense of community that sets us apart from other towns. It’s in our top ranked schools, where dedicated educators open hearts and minds, preparing the next generation with the tools not just to succeed, but to lead. It’s in our magnificent parks, where families gather, laughter echoes and music and games are played. It’s in our library, a beautiful place where everyone is welcome to learn, imagine and grow.

Earlier this week, our Village Board passed a resolution in support of the Stronger Together Deerfield initiative, a collaborative, community-wide effort to bring together local government, schools, municipal and civic organizations, businesses, nonprofits and other partners to promote well-being, resilience and connection for all. The goal is to create a unifying message that strengthens community connections and fosters well-being for everyone.
On September 20, we will come together again during our annual Harvest Fest where we celebrate the season, enjoy live music and take pleasure in our local traditions, all in the spirit of community. Leading up to that, our Farmers Market continues to offer more than just fresh produce and sweet treats, it offers connection, conversation and community. It’s where neighbors become friends and where the roots of this town grow deeper. Later this year, Jewett Park will transform into a field of American Flags to honor our veterans who have served and protected our nation. It will also symbolize that when we overcome our challenges, when we cast aside pettiness and hatred, we always come together as a community, emerging stronger in the process.
The greatness of a community is not measured by its wealth or convenience. It’s measured by the compassionate actions of its people. It’s measured in how we lead, how we support one another when times are tough and how we demonstrate our unyielding resilience when faced with adversity. Let’s choose unity over cynicism, purpose over fear and hope over hate. Together we can move mountains. We are Deerfield, and we are stronger together.
Thank you,
Mayor Daniel C. Shapiro
