Warriors Dominate Maine East, 48-6

Special teams score three touchdowns for DHS football team, offense scores two and defense adds another.

The Final Score:  Deerfield 48, Maine East 6 

Warriors’ Star Performers:             Sam Modro returned a pair of punts for touchdowns and reached the end zone a third time when he recovered a fumble and ran it in. Brett Freedberg scored two touchdowns, one on a 66-yard run and the other on a 65-yard kickoff return.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       The entire Deerfield defensive unit. Nearly all defenders got into the action as Deerfield recovered three fumbles, made three interceptions, limited the Blue Demons to only three downs on six different posessions and limited Maine East to 37 yards in Warrior territory all night.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Niles North at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 in Skokie

The Bottom Line:      After stifling the Blue Demons on their first two possessions, Modro scored Deerfield’s first touchdown on a 55-yard punt return with 5:29 left in the first quarter. After recovering a fumble late in the first quarter, big runs by were capped by Landen Hinds’ five yard scoring dash for a 14-0 lead.

With 9:33 left in the second quarter, Deerfield advanced the ball a few yards before Freedberg broke free for his 66-yard touchdown scamper for a 20-0 edge. Modro’s second punt return made it 28-0 with 4:59 left in the first half. 

Deerfield opened the second half with Freedberg’s 65-yard touchdown run for a 35-0 lead. Modro made it 41-0 with 7:47 remaining in the third quarter when he recovered a fumble on the 10-yard line and ran into the end zone. The final Warrior score came when William Higginson scored from three yards out to cap a 55-yard drive. 

The Warriors are now 3-4 for the season and 2-1 in the Central Suburban League North Division.
