Warriors Produce State Qualifiers, League Champs

Four badminton players head to State Meet, soccer team repeats CSL crown while baseball and volleyball teams keep winning.

With four Deerfield High School badminton players qualifying for the State Meet and the soccer team completing two undefeated years in Central Suburban League North Division play Thursday, the Warrior teams keep posting wins this spring.

Badminton

The Final Score:        1. New Trier 15, 2. Deerfield 13, 3. Maine South 9, Evanston 6, Waukegan 3, Glenbrook 2. 

Warriors Star Performers:   Katie Frankel and Ally Kolpas won the Sectional doubles title to qualify for the State Finals.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Cara Silverman and Marissa Levy will head to State in singles as each reached the semifinals before falling. Silverman topped Levy in the third-place match. 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors compete in the State Meet Friday and Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. 

Soccer 

The Final Score:        Deerfield 2, Maine West 1 

Warriors Star Performers:  Amnda Imyak and Trishie Schweinfurth scored a goal each.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Samara Haas chipped in with an assist and Sarah Ginn had three saves in goal. Claire Mulert, Maddy Otto, Jesse Holloway and Jordyn Winston stood out on defense, according to Coach Rich Grady.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors compete in the Glenbrook North Invitational at 7:30 p.m. today and 9 a.m. Saturday. 

The Bottom Line:      Deerfield secured its second straight Central Suburban League North Division championship continuing its undefeated streak in the conference to two years. Wasting little time, Imyak headed a ball into the goal on an assist from Haas at 2:39 of the opening half. Maine West tied the game with nine minutes remaining before intermission. Deerfield took the lead for good when Schweinfurth scored on a penalty kick with five minutes left before halftime. The Warriors are 11-3-2 for the season. 

Volleyball 

The Final Score:        Deerfield defeated Maine East, 25-23 and 25-19. 

Warriors Star Performers:   John Harlan scored with 12 kills while adding eight digs and a pair of aces. Jordan Fine dished off 28 assists along with five digs, two aces and a kill. 

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Zach Hara contributed seven kills, seven digs and an ace while Eric Slepian added five kills and a dig. Adam Nadler had seven digs and three kills while Eli Schmidt helped out with five digs and three kills. 

Who’s Next:   The Warriors compete in the York Invitational at 8 a.m. Saturday. 

The Bottom Line:      Deerfield improved its record to 17-3 for the season and 7-1 in the Central Suburban League North Division. It was also awarded the second seed in the Antioch Sectional coming up later this month. 

Baseball 

The Final Score:        Deerfield 7, Maine East 1 

Warriors Star Performer:    Xander Horwitz struck out four for his fourth win of the year on the mound.

Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Zack Wade and Andrew Fisher had a pair of hits each while Alex Karkazis’s provided a two-run double. Jake Stotter threw an inning of relief.

Who’s Next:   The Warriors travel to Maine South at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. 

The Bottom Line:      The Warriors improved their record to 15-6 for the season and remain undefeated in the Central Suburban League North Division at 6-0.
