660 Students Graduate From Oakton Community College
The school's annual commencement program took place May 14.

More thanΒ 660Β students received degrees and certificates atΒ OaktonΒ Community CollegeβsΒ 42nd Annual Commencement, held MayΒ 14, at the CollegeβsΒ Des PlainesΒ campus.
After a welcome byΒ OaktonΒ Community CollegeΒ PresidentΒ Margaret B. Lee, Student Government Association Past PresidentΒ Alfred RaulΒ HegyesΒ ofΒ NilesΒ gave a farewell address. He served as co-president and president ofΒ Oaktonβs Habitat for Humanity Chapter, and stepped into his SGA role in summerΒ 2012. As SGA president, Hegyes was a tireless booster, spearheading efforts to increase student attendance at College basketball games. He plans on pursuing a bachelorβs degree in political science at theΒ UniversityΒ ofΒ IllinoisΒ atΒ Chicago.

The College conferred itsΒ Distinguished Alumna AwardΒ on Cheryl-Lynn May, who earned an associateβs degree and a certificate in museum studies from the College inΒ 2006Β andΒ graduatedΒ with high honors. Originally from Mundelein, she received twoΒ Jack KentΒ CookeΒ Scholarships that enabled her to earn her bachelorβs and masterβs degrees fromΒ Lake ForestΒ CollegeΒ and theΒ UniversityΒ ofΒ DelawareΒ respectively. While inΒ Delaware, she was named aΒ LoisΒ F. McNeil Fellow and theΒ 2008Β winner of theΒ Montgomery ConnoisseurshipΒ Competition. Presently, she is a resident ofΒ Columbus,Β OhioΒ and works atΒ OhioΒ StateΒ UniversityΒ as the curatorial assistantΒ in the exhibitions department of theΒ WexnerΒ CenterΒ for the Arts, where she coordinates bringing nationally and internationally recognizedΒ art and artists to centralΒ Ohio.Β An enduring and devoted advocate forΒ Oakton, she serves as an alumni mentor to students and continues to model the power of community college education.Β Β
Ravi Salgia, M.D., Ph.D., director of Thoracic Oncology Program at theΒ UniversityΒ ofΒ Chicago, vice chair of translational research in the Department of Medicine, and associate director for transitional research in theΒ ComprehensiveΒ CancerΒ Center, gave the commencement address.Β

His research focuses on targeted therapies that enhance cancer patientsβ quality of life.Β The American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute, theΒ Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, and the University of Chicago Research Cancer Center have funded Salgiaβs prolific research. He took database management courses throughΒ OaktonβsΒ AllianceΒ for Lifelong Learning, which gave him the ability to effectively manage and present his findings. A resident ofΒ Park Ridge, Salgia is the author of hundreds of articles and pieces published in journals and books related to thoracic malignancies. He also is an associate editor for various medical journals. Most recently, Salgia received aΒ 2013Β Society of American Asian Scientists in Cancer Research (SAASCR) award for his outstanding contributions to cancer research.
