Consulate General of Pakistan hosted 79th Independence Day in Chicago

The Consulate General of Pakistan in Chicago hosted a dignified event to mark the 79th Independence Day of Pakistan.

The celebration brought together a large and diverse gathering of Pakistani-American community members, local officials, and members of the Consular Corps. This year’s celebrations also commemorated Pakistan’s resounding success in “Marka-e-Haq” and Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos.

U.S. Congressman Danny Davis was the Chief Guest at the occasion. Other elected officials present included Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs, as well as mayors and representatives from various city administrations across the state.

In his address, Consul General Tariq Karim extended warm felicitations to the Pakistani-American community on the occasion of Independence Day, emphasizing the historical significance of August 14. He noted that, despite various challenges, Pakistan has achieved several important milestones over the past 78 years. He also highlighted the messages issued by the President, Prime Minister, and Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister of Pakistan on this occasion.

The Consul General underscored that Pakistan’s geographic location, demographic dividend, market size, natural and human resources, growing tech ecosystem, and liberal investment policies position Pakistan as an important economic, transit, and investment hub. He also spoke of Pakistan’s vast tourism potential, with its rich cultural, historical, and natural attractions.

Consul General Tariq Karim also briefed the audience on developments following unprovoked Indian aggression and Pakistan’s measured, proportionate, yet decisive response. He stated that Pakistan’s victory in Marka-e-Haq was not merely a military success, but a reflection of the nation’s unshakable resolve, moral strength, and the unparalleled professionalism and valor of its Armed Forces. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm commitment to peace and the peaceful resolution of all outstanding disputes, while stating that any threat to Pakistan’s territorial integrity would be met with a firm and effective response. Drawing attention to the continued suffering of the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJK), he reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering support for their legitimate struggle for the right to self-determination.

The Consul General also emphasized the significance of the longstanding Pakistan–U.S. partnership, noting the growing collaboration across diverse sectors including trade and economy, technology, energy, agriculture, mining, counterterrorism, and education. Outlining his key priorities, he shared that Pakistan’s partnership with the Midwest region is expanding, with a rise in trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges. He thanked the elected officials for their participation and continued support.

Consul General Tariq Karim commended the Pakistani-American community for their vital contributions to the socio-economic development of both Pakistan and the United States, and for serving as bridge-builders between the two nations. Recalling Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s timeless principles of Unity, Faith, and Discipline, he encouraged the community to renew their commitment to Pakistan and to play an active role in strengthening Pakistan–U.S. relations.

In their remarks, Congressman Danny Davis, State Treasurer Michael Frerichs, and Mayor Rory E. Hoskins extended warm greetings to the Pakistani-American community. They acknowledged the community’s valuable contributions to the multicultural and dynamic fabric of Chicago and reaffirmed the importance of the bilateral relationship.

A cake-cutting ceremony was held, with Consul General Tariq Karim and Congressman Danny Davis cutting the Pakistan Independence Day cake.

Messages of greetings were also received from several dignitaries, including Congressman Sean Casten, Congressman Mike Carey, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, Mayor of Chicago Brandon Johnson, and Mayor of Bolingbrook Mary Alexander-Basta.

The event featured vibrant cultural performances, including national songs by Pakistani artists. Guests also enjoyed traditional Pakistani cuisine.

Earlier, to mark the occasion, Consul General Tariq Karim hoisted the national flag of Pakistan.
