Des Plaines Considers New Ward Boundaries

As a result of the population changes between the 2000 and 2010 censuses, Des Plaines must redraw its ward boundaries.

Former city attorney Dave Wiltse presented with the first version of the new map at the last meeting on Aug. 20. At that time, several aldermen expressed concerns about the map, and Wiltse agreed to meet with them individually to address the issues.

Wiltse told aldermen in 2000 the city’s population was a little more than 56,000, and in 2010 it was 58,346, a growth of 1,419.

“Most of that growth in that area has been north of the railroad tracks in the first and seventh ward,” Wiltse said.

Wiltse said that was why the proposed map brought the first and seventh wards north of the railroad tracks, to accommodate the population growth.

City council approved the second version of the new ward map unanimously at the meeting on Tuesday.

The new map is posted on the city’s website, and will be read for a second time at city council at its next meeting on Sept. 17.
