Drivers Spent 17 Million Hours Sitting on the Kennedy Expressway

That's a long time to sit in your car in the No. 1 traffic bottleneck in the United States.

The top bottleneck in America— Kennedy Expressway (I-90) between the Circle Interchange (I-290) and Edens junction (I-94) — extends 12 miles, costing motorists 16.9 million hours’ worth of time, equivalent to $418 million in 2014.

More than 6.3 million gallons of fuel is wasted on I-90 while cars idle or crawl in traffic.

The American Highway Users Alliance identified the top 50 worst bottlenecks across the United States on Monday, with Chicago causing the most traffic headaches, followed by Los Angeles and New York City.

By just fixing America’s worst bottleneck, an annual reduction of 133 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions would also be likely, the study found.

I-90 between I-55 and W. Pershing Road ranks 23rd in the nation. I-94 between the I-90 interchange and N. Elston ranks 46th.
