Armed Man Found Walking Outside Woman's House In Downers: Cops

Police say the man was "heavily intoxicated and in a confused state of mind."

WOODRIDGE, IL — Downers Grove police seized a handgun and a pocket knife from a "heavily intoxicated" man who was arrested after a woman found him walking around outside her home.

Police were called to the 5400 block of Brookbank Court around 1 a.m. on Feb. 23 after a resident saw a man she didn't know open her front storm door and then her back storm door. She told police she looked at her Ring camera surveillance and noticed the man was still outside.

When police got to the scene, they say a man, whom they later identified as Zachary Shelton of the 1000 block of North Avenue, Lake Bluff, appear from the side of the home. According to a police blotter, Shelton was "heavily intoxicated and in a confused state."

Police say Shelton told them he thought he was in Lake Bluff. Officers say they searched Shelton and found a pocket knife on him, along with a 9mm Sig Sauer 965PXL handgun that was in a fanny pack he was wearing.

Officers also reported finding Shelton in possession of two magazines and 26 rounds of ammunition.

According to police, Shelton did not have a valid concealed carry license. He was taken into custody and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon — firearm in vehicle or concealed.

Shelton is scheduled to appear in court on March 24.
