Downers Grove Man Faces Up to 3 Years in Prison for Impersonating Cop
John C. Campbell, 30, pleaded guilty Tuesday to to false personation of a peace officer, court records show.

A Downers Grove man is facing up to three years in prison for falsely claiming to be a U.S. Marshal while trying to open a bank account with a $3.5 million check, court records show.
John C. Campbell, 30, of the 2500 block of Ogden Avenue, pleaded guilty Tuesday to false personation of a peace officer in November 2011, according to court records.
Campbell was arrested by Lisle police after attempting to open an account at U.S. Bank, 1026 Ogden Ave., using a fraudulent $3.5 million check and falsely claiming to be a U.S. Marshal, authorities said.

During a consent search of Campbell’s hotel room, officers discovered a variety of items he was using to represent himself as a U.S. Marshal, including a false badge, two starter pistols, and a variety of other law enforcement equipment props. Police also found a receipt showing he used forged documents to buy a new vehicle from a Lisle car dealer, according to a Daily Herald report.

In exchange for Campbell's guilty plea, prosecutors dismissed charges of attempted deceptive practice, unlawful use of weapons, obstructing identification and forgery, court records show.

Campbell remains in DuPage County Jail, and is due in court Feb. 8 for sentencing. He faces up to three years in prison, according to a Daily Herald.
