DuPage Coroner Investigating the Skydiving Death of Michael Collins

Collins, 48, died Sunday after colliding with a billboard mid-air.

The DuPage County Coroner’s Office, alongside the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating the skydiving death of Illinois resident Michael Collins.

Collins, 48, who originally hails from Lacon, was skydiving in unincorporated LaSalle County shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday when he collided with a billboard sign at 3139 Rt. 71.

When police arrived, Collins was hanging on the sign, suspended about one foot above the ground, the coroner’s office reported. He was cut down immediately and was administered life support before being flown by helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Collins was pronounced dead at 12:06 p.m. Oct. 23.

Officials announced the preliminary causes of death were massive traumatic injuries that came as a result of hitting the sign. However, the coroner is waiting on toxicology results to announce the finalized cause and manner of death.
