One of the First Houses Ever Built in Downers Grove Seeks Landmark Status

The home was used as a stopping point on the underground railroad.

One of the first structures ever erected in Downers Grove — and built by the Downer family itself — is seeking historical landmark status, My Suburban Life reported.

Judy and Arthur Frigo, the couple who own the house now, recently filed paperwork to designate the home as a landmark, according to My Suburban Life. A hearing on the subject will take place this month.

There are 11 designated historic landmarks in Downers Grove as of this moment, according to the village’s website. The site also provides links to applications like the one the Frigos filled out and databases that help residents determine if their home could be a landmark, too.

In order to apply for landmark status, homeowners have to first meet with Community Development staff to discuss the property, then fill out and submit an application to be considered. Those steps are followed by a public hearing in front of the Architectural Design Review Board and consideration by the village council.
