Public Works Employee Dies Fixing Burst Water Main In Westmont
Matt Heiden, who had worked for Westmont since 2019, became trapped underground while fixing a broken water main Thursday.

WESTMONT, IL — A Westmont Public Works employee died Thursday after he got trapped underground while repairing a water main break.
Matt Heiden had been employed with the Village of since 2019, when he started as a seasonal employee. He signed on as a full-time public works employee in 2021.
First responders were called to the area of 60th Street and Deming Place around 11:45 a.m. for a report that Heiden was trapped underground in a water main vault where he had been repairing a water main that burst, according to a news release from the Village of Westmont.

Heiden was removed from the vault around 12:40 p.m. and taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Westmont officials released a notification Thursday afternoon informing residents of Heiden's death, writing that they were sharing the news "with a heavy heart."
