Scammer Posed As DuPage Sergeant In Call To Downers Grove Resident

Police say the caller tried to get the resident to send $15,000.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — A Downers Grove resident was targeted in a scam call in which the caller posed as a sergeant from the DuPage County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) and tried to solicit $15,000 from the resident.

The victim told police they got a call labeled "No Call ID" on March 10 just before 11 a.m. They said the caller identified themselves as a sergeant with the sheriff's office's civil processing unit and said their badge number was 8117C.

Police say the caller told the resident they had failed to appear as a character witness for a court case in February. The caller told the resident two federal contempt of citations had been issued for them. They told the resident that if they made two payments of $7,500, they would not be arrested. The caller also said the funds would be returned if the resident turned themselves in to police.
