Elgin offers holiday tree disposal through January 16; guidelines set for residents (kanecountyreporter.com) — Elgin residents can set out live Christmas trees on their regular trash days through January 16 without using trash stickers, as long as decorations and stands are removed and trees aren’t bagged. Taller trees must be broken down, and artificial trees still need one sticker. After January 16, trees will require a bulk-item sticker starting January 19.

2. Elgin plans annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration events in January (kanecountyreporter.com) — Elgin is gearing up for its 41st annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations, including a Jan. 17 prayer breakfast at Elgin Community College and a youth event at The Centre of Elgin. Residents can also support local food pantries with donations at Food for Greater Elgin, making the long weekend a mix of reflection, service, and community connection.
3. Kane County Board seeking applications for District 9 seat (chicagotribune.com) — If you live in the Elgin portion of Kane County Board District 9, your seat is about to be temporarily filled after member Gary Daugherty’s resignation due to illness. The board is now seeking a Republican resident from within the district to serve until voters choose a permanent representative in November, while another district seat also remains vacant.
4. Adventure Island, lap pool at Elgin's Schock Centre reopen Monday (chicagotribune.com) — Elgin swimmers can head back to Adventure Island and the lap pool at the Edward Schock Centre when they reopen at 5 a.m. Monday after a three-week maintenance shutdown. The city also is replacing 3-meter diving boards at both the Schock Centre and Wing Park Pool, with some brief lane closures expected later this month during installation.
5. Illinois Community Colleges Band Together to Fight Food Insecurity On Campus This Holiday Season (riverbender.com) — Elgin Community College led all Illinois community colleges in this year’s statewide Feed the Need Campus Food Drive, collecting more than 34,000 non-perishable items for its Spartan Food Pantry. The effort is part of a growing, friendly competition among campuses that nearly doubled last year’s total and aims to ease food insecurity for students and nearby residents.
