Award-winning Photojournalist Will Present Flickering Treasures at The York

All are invited this week to a presentation by award-winning Baltimore Sun photojournalist and author Amy Davis. 

Davis will talk about her book, Flickering Treasures: Rediscovering Baltimore’s Forgotten Movie Theaters at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at York Theatre, 150 N. York St.

Flickering Treasures celebrates a thriving city at the dawn of its movie-going era. Baltimore had more than 200 movie theaters during the 20th century; at least half survive in some form as cinematic ghosts on gritty urban streets. About 60 theater buildings, ranging from theater “palaces” to more modest neighborhood movie houses, display a wide range of architectural styles. Davis's work illuminates these mostly forgotten cinemas through evocative color images. 

Since joining the staff of The Baltimore Sun in 1987,  Davis has garnered many national awards. Her fine art training from The Cooper Union (New York) informs her documentary approach. Photographic work by Davis has been exhibited at The Brooklyn Museum and is in the collection of the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers.

Davis is one of the first recipients of the THS Thomas R. DuBuque Research Fellowship in honor of past THS president Thomas R. DuBuque. Intended to support scholars conducting research in the Society’s archives and collections, the Fellowship provides grants of up to $1,500 for research in the THS American Theatre Architecture Archive.
