Carolyn White of Elmhurst, IL is back to walking and exercising thanks to the help of some dedicated surgeons and a new technology that lengthens legs. After suffering a traumatic injury to her leg during a golf cart accident, doctors thought her leg had to be amputated. Instead, Carolyn had six surgeries to correct her injury. As Carolyn was still growing during the time of surgery, her bones grew at an uneven rate causing her to walk with a limp.
Carolyn visited Dr. Monica Kogan, pediatric sports medicine specialist at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, to see what could be done about her one-inch leg length discrepancy. Dr. Kogan is the only physician in Chicago who uses the Precise Leg Lengthening system, which is a handheld device that patients can use to lengthen their bones at home.
Carolyn visited Dr. Kogan on a regular basis for X-rays and to monitor her progress. As with any lengthening procedure, she couldn’t bear weight on her legs for several months.
