Dramatic Truck Explosion Injures Driver, Damages Homes In West Suburbs

One house was evacuated due to structural damage and potential for collapse, authorities said.

ADDISON, IL — A dramatic truck explosion Saturday in Addison injured the driver and damaged multiple homes, according to authorities.

The incident, which was captured in security camera footage published by WGN, occurred around 8:40 a.m. in the 300 block of North Wood Dale Road, authorities said, adding they believe the blast was accidental and that it was caused by a propane tank that was leaking into the flatbed truck.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene to find a large field of debris between Oak Street and Overkamp Avenue, according to the Addison Fire Protection District.

The driver was treated and taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, and one house was evacuated due to structural damage and potential for collapse, the fire district said, adding crews controlled fluid leaking from the truck.

Multiple homes were damaged, according to Addison police, who noted the DuPage County Bomb Squad and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted in the investigation.
