Elmhurst Church Leader Against Bandshell Next To Mansion

ELMHURST, IL – The head of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church has joined the opposition to building a bandshell next to the iconic Wilder Mansion.

In a letter to the Elmhurst park board this week, the Rev. Thomas Paul said he was against placing the bandshell east of the mansion. Other possible spots in Wilder Park, he said, would not disrupt the park's beauty.

The church property is on the east side of Wilder Park.

In his letter, Paul said the bishop of the Diocese of Joliet and many other priests have commented on the significance of the park and mansion across the street from the church.

"More now than ever, the iconic mansion has a significant presence," said Paul, who started as the church's pastor in 2010. "Anyone who drives down Cottage Hill Avenue certainly recognizes what a unique structure exists within the park."

He said he was grateful for the park board's leadership in planning to build the bandshell.

"I commend you for all your efforts you have undertaken to make the right decision in this matter," Paul said.

Two surveys – one by residents and the other by the park district – have indicated that most residents dislike the site just east of the mansion.

In late May, a 4-3 park board majority favored the mansion site. But local opposition has built up ever since. The months-long debate has resulted in tense moments among board members.

Earlier this month, members agreed to spend up to $12,000 for more design work for three possible sites – the lawn east of the mansion, the north rim of the old ice rink and the rink's south rim.

The park board meets at 7 p.m. Monday at Wilder Mansion.
