Elmhurst D205's Average Class Size Fell Last Year

ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst School District 205's average class size dropped last school year to the lowest point since 2018.

In response to a Patch inquiry, the district said Wednesday its average class size was 22.3 students last year, down from 24.2 the previous year.

Through a public records request, Patch asked the district whether it had any documents showing the expected average class size next school year.

The district replied that it had no such documents.

Last year's average class size will be included in the Illinois Report Card in the fall. That's when the state updates information for districts across the state.

Last year's average size in Elmhurst was the lowest since 2017-18, when it was 22 students. Schools and grade levels have varying class sizes, based on a number of factors.

Over the last few months, parents at several Elmhurst elementary schools have expressed concerns about class sizes. The district's administration recently responded.

In fall 2017, parents gathered more than 600 signatures on a Change.org petition calling for smaller class sizes. The average class size of 22 students that year was up from 18.9 the previous year.

That petition was originally directed at lobbying the district for another third-grade class at Jackson Elementary. That changed.

"While we have reason to be optimistic this need will be addressed, our petition has now grown in scope," the petition said. "It's time to look at class size across the board and down the road!"
