Elmhurst Girl Scouts to Kick off Season with Lantern Hike

Troops will prove Girl Scout knowledge for prizes and collect donations for the food pantry.

The Girl Scout Service Units of North and South Elmhurst have teamed up to resurrect the Lantern Hike, a favorite fall tradition in the suburb for many years.

The Lantern Hike begins at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9, when more than 200 Girl Scouts will hike one mile of Elmhurst’s Illinois Prairie Path from Poplar Ave. to the Gazebo at Spring Road. Along the way, older Cadette troops will test the younger Daisies, Brownies and Juniors — ranging from kindergarteners to fifth graders — on their knowledge of Girl Scout trivia in exchange for glow prizes.

The hike is part of a larger community service efort, where Girl Scouts will also be collecting and donating toiletry essentials to support the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry.

The event will conclude with hot cocoa and cookies to celebrate the October kickoff of the new Girl Scout season.
