Elmhurst Man's Car Stolen In Tow Scam: Police
A thief posing as a tow truck driver made off with the car, authorities said.
ELMHURST, IL – In the last few days, Elmhurst police handled cases involving a stolen car, theft, retail theft, phone harassment and a federal agent scam. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports:
Stolen car
- A resident in the 100 block of Linden Avenue told police that he was involved in a crash. The next day, a person claiming to be from Geico contacted him about towing his car to prevent further damage. A towing company responded and towed the car for repairs. When the victim visited the address on the towing paperwork, the car was missing. The resident was told by his insurance company that the towing company had been linked to several other vehicle thefts under similar circumstances. The incident occurred Nov. 19, with the resident reporting it two weeks later. An investigation is pending.
Federal agent scam

- A resident in the 200 block of North Maison Court told police Wednesday that she was contacted by someone identifying himself as a federal agent. He requested cash be left on the front porch. The resident realized it was a scam and contacted the police.
Theft
- A resident in the 300 block of East St. Charles Road placed three rings in his dishwasher for cleaning Nov 28. Upon returning, he was unable to find them. He considered them stolen. He reported the theft four days later.
- A man stole three reindeer decorations about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday from the front of Elmhurst Family Dental, 314 N. York St. An investigation is pending. The man was described as white and wearing a blue baseball hat, a brown and green shirt or jacket, blue jeans and dark shoes.
Retail theft

- Two men concealed merchandise and fled in a black Toyota Corolla about 5 p.m. Tuesday at Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83. An investigation is pending. One of the men was described as Hispanic, 15 to 30, having black hair, and wearing a gray sweater and a blue jean-type jacket. The other suspect was described as Hispanic, 18 to 40, having black and gray hair, and wearing a long blue puffer jacket and black jeans.
Phone harassment
- Someone repeatedly called the police station, 125 E. First St., Wednesday afternoon, harassing staff and threatening to harm officers. An investigation is pending.
