Elmhurst Quarry In Action After Several Inches Of Rain
Du Page County officials estimate that about 5 inches of rain has fallen this week.

DU PAGE COUNTY, IL – The Elmhurst Quarry is in operation after several inches of rain have fallen this week. Since the beginning of the week, anywhere from 4.5 to 5.5 inches of rainfall was reported countywide according to Du Page County Stormwater Management. As of Thursday morning, an additional half inch was expected to fall by the end of the day.
This rainfall elevated streams enough countywide to trigger operation of both larger, mechanically operated flood control facilities and smaller, gravity operated flood control facilities, according to the county's news release.
"Of the 16 flood control facilities DuPage County operates, five larger facilities have mechanical equipment, allowing staff to control them according to a predetermined operating plan. The remaining facilities protect the surrounding areas from flooding without human intervention using fixed weirs and natural drainage systems. In total, the facilities have a floodwater storage capacity of nearly six billion gallons."
