Firework Blamed For Elmhurst Garbage Can Fire: Cops

Surveillance video showed a possible suspect vehicle, police said.

ELMHURST, IL – Someone placed a lit firework in a garbage container last week in an Elmhurst neighborhood, police said. The can was at the curb, awaiting trash pickup.

The resulting fire occurred about 2 a.m. Friday in the 200 block of North Indiana Street, police said.

Residents in the neighborhood shared surveillance video that showed a newer model gray or silver pickup truck was in the area around the time of the fire, police said.

"The Elmhurst Police Department is actively investigating this incident," Deputy Police Chief Brett Kaczorowski said in a message to Patch. "We appreciate the assistance of our residents who have already provided video surveillance."

Police are still looking for video from 1:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday in the neighborhood or any other information about the incident. Residents are asked to call police at 630-530-3050.
