ELMHURST, IL – A man on Friday pointed a gun at an Elmhurst resident who saw the man crouching near the resident's car, police said.

Devontae Allmon, 29, of unincorporated Villa Park, faces several felony charges, according to a news release from DuPage County prosecutors. He was taken to the county jail.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Friday, Elmhurst officers were called to the 600 block of Armitage Avenue.

Police said the homeowner found Allmon next to his car. When the resident approached, Allmon pulled out a black handgun, racked it, pointed it at the homeowner and said something to the effect of "don't try me," police said.

The homeowner went inside and called 911.

Officers found Allmon about a block away and ordered him to stop. Instead, he ran away, but then slowed to a walk, dropping an item on the ground, police said.

Allmon walked another 15 feet, went to the ground and complied with officers' commands, police said.

Police said they found a loaded .40-caliber Smith & Wesson M&P Shield in the area where Allmon was suspected of dropping something.

Less than an hour earlier, Allmon, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was in a car that did not belong to him in the 600 block of Babcock Avenue, police said. When others confronted him, he ran away.

Police said they also found out Allmon had pulled on the door handles of multiple cars in the area that night.

In the news release, DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said Allmon was a convicted felon who had forfeited his right to own a gun legally.

"Being threatened with a loaded gun outside your home is one of the most frightening experiences anyone can endure and can have lasting consequences for the victim," Berlin said. "This type of behavior not only terrifies the immediate victims, but also has a ripple effect on the entire community, violating our most basic right to safety and leaving residents worried if they will be next."

Allmon was charged with the felonies of possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon while wearing body armor and burglary of a vehicle, police said.

He also faces the misdemeanors of attempted criminal trespassing to vehicles and resisting a police officer.

A DuPage County judge ordered Allmon to stay in jail until his trial, police said.
