Teen Hockey Player Dies Of Mono Complications

Gabe Remy, 18, played for the Orland Park-based Chicago Fury and planned to pursue a professional hockey career.

ELMHURST, IL — A teenage hockey player who planned to pursue a professional career in the sport died this past weekend, shortly after playing in a game for his Chicago Fury 18U team. Doctors said Gabe Remy, an 18-year-old recent alum of IC Catholic Prep in Elmhurst, died of complications related to mononucleosis, according to ABC-Chicago and other media outlets.

His teammates on the Fury team, which plays at the Arctic Ice Arena in Orland Park, said Remy did not know he had mononucleosis but showed signs he wasn't feeling well earlier last week, ABC reported. He felt like he had something similar to the flu, but still played in a game on Saturday.

Remy died Sunday after he was taken to an emergency room with a ruptured spleen, according to ABC.

"I kind of like expected to come to the rink today and have him here, so I'm kind of in shock still," teammate Zack Zeidel told the news station.

A GoFundMe has raised more than $20,000 in just a couple of days to benefit the Chicago Fury in memory of Remy.
