Varsity Girls' Tennis Results from Elmhurst (York) Sectional

York finished with 28 points in the I.H.S.A. Sectional on Saturday, Oct. 17, which earned them second place in the Sectional behind Timothy Christian. York came up just short of winning its 9th consecutive Sectional Championship for the Girls’ Tennis team.

In Singles, Maja Shaw qualified for her 1st State Tournament by finishing 4th place at the Sectional Meet. In her quarterfinal match vs. Kelley Hodyl (I.C.), Maja came out striking the ball well and won the first set 6-2. She then dropped the 2nd set 0-6 but bounced back nicely to capture the 3rd set 6-2. Maja stayed the course very well throughout the match and was able to play very steady in the 3rd set.

In Doubles, Abby Brigman (20 wins, 15 losses in 2014)/Alex Hennessy (21 wins and 18 losses in 2014) won their first Sectional Title by defeating teammates Claire Meyer (20 wins, 18 losses in 2014)/Julia Riddle (16 wins, 16 losses in 2014) 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the final. This is the 1st State Tournament for both Brigman/Hennessy and Meyer/Riddle. This is the 9th consecutive year that a York Doubles team has won the Sectional Title in the Doubles field and the 5th consecutive season that York Doubles teams have finished 1st and 2nd place at the Sectional Meet.
