Wow - Do We Have a Lot of College News to Share; See Any Familiar Names?

The following students from Elmhurst are earning honors and recognition at colleges all over the country.

Lydia Wolfe won a fellowship from the American Chemical Society for organic chemistry research at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. Wolfe will use the fellowship to develop a more efficient method of converting chemical compounds into usable forms for everyday products. Wolfe will work with St. Olaf assistant professor of chemistry Dipannita Kalyani and student Will Wertjes to examine the best way to use nickel, a cheap transition metal, as a catalyst to convert naturally occurring carbon-hydrogen compounds to carbon-carbon compounds. These carbon-carbon bonds are prevalent in compounds that are used to make everyday materials, such as pharmaceuticals and fuel.

Mary Beth McLean received a bachelor's degree from Providence College, Providence, R.I. McLean graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in English.

Katherine Kirby and Sebastian Pernal, students at University of Illinois at Chicago, were inducted into Phi Kappa Phi honor society.

Abigail Heisler, a 2009 graduate of York High School, earned a bachelor's degree Magna Cum Laude in tourism, planning and development from University of New Hampshire, Durham.

York High School graduate Kevin Chrisman was awarded the Ontario Trillium Scholarship worth $40,000 a year to attend York University in Toronto. He plans to enter the doctor of philosophy program and will be studying 20th century Mexican cultural history, specifically Mexico's experience during the Cold War. Chrisman earned his master's degree at University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Read Chrisman's statement of interest for the Ontario Trillium Scholarship here.

Catherine Fetscher, a senior majoring in Spanish and communication sciences and disorders at Augustana College, Rock Island,  spent five weeks in Cambodia visiting the temples of Angkor Wat and the cities of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. She also taught English at a Cambodian school.

Four students from Elmhurst spent 11 days in Rome as part of the Christian traditions and faiths in dialogue class at Augustana College. The are senior Claire Doberstein, a psychology major; senior Matthew Mordini, political science; junior Rachel Przybylek, religion; and junior Elyse Sherlock, communication sciences and disorders.

Steven Neubauer was inducted into Kappa Mu Epsilon national math honor society at Lewis University, Romeoville.

Kara Sajeske, daughter of Linda Sajeske, earned a bachelor's degree in studio art from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn.

Wendy Bindeman, daughter of Edwin and Michelle Bindeman, was named to dean's list for the spring semester at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. She is majoring in biology and Spanish.

Patrick Joseph Baubly was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Clemson University, Clemson, S.C. Baubly is majoring in management, with an emphasis in international management.

Adam Hibner and Catherine Navarro were named to the dean's list for the spring semester at University of Wisconsin, Whitewater.

Emiliana Mladic was inducted into Psi Chi psychology honor society at Lewis University, Romeoville.

Erin Heinz was awarded a Presidential Scholarship for four years of full tuition from Milwaukee School of Engineering. She plans to major in software engineering.
