A man who was going to perform maintenance on a World War II-era U.S. military M1 carbine rifle sometime around Sept. 18 placed the gun on a work bench in his garage and stepped away several times. He returned to find the rifle had gone missing from the garage in the 800 block of Fairfield, according to Elmhurst police.Two pellet rifles that were also in plain view were left undisturbed. An evidence technician responded to the scene.
