Sparks grew up playing hockey at Elmhurst YMCA and on the asphalt at Eldridge Park.
York High School graduate Garret Sparks, who in January was on the USA Junior Hockey Team that won the Gold in Russia, has been signed to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a three-year entry-level contract, the Maple Leafs announced Tuesday.
Sparks, a goaltender, appeared in 60 games with the Ontario Hocky League's Guelph Storm this season, amassing a record 36 wins for the season.
According to the official site of the Maple Leafs, Sparks led all OHL goaltenders in games played, wins and shutouts, was fifth in save percentage and seventh in goals against average. His 36 wins and seven shutouts were single-season Guelph Storm records, and he was named the OHL's Goaltender of the Month in January, and the Canadian Hockey League's Goaltender of the Week March 12-18.
Sparks, 6' 2", 213 pounds, was selected by the Maple Leaf's in the seventh round.
The 19-year-old learned to skate and play hockey at Elmhurst YMCA, and played ice hockey for the Chicago Blues at Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville and the Chicago Mission at Seven bridges Ice Arena in Woodridge. His favorite off-ice activity was playing roller hockey with his neighborhood friends on the asphalt at Elmhurst's Eldridge Park.
